Homes in Jackson Going on 50 Days Without Water

Posted: Updated:

Since the end of January, Jackson resident Cindi Abbey has had to boil bottled water on the stove, and carry it to her sink in order to do her dishes.

She makes a few trips a week to buy water from the store to fill her toilet bowl and dispensable water jugs around her house so she can flush, drink and brush her teeth.

"I wonder how the mayor would feel if he couldn't wash his hands after he went to the bathroom," said Abbey.

Wednesday will be day number 50 Abbey has had to live this way because the water pipes connecting to her home are frozen.

Abbey, a cancer patient, spoke with us after her latest round of chemotherapy. She fears the situation has begun to affect her health.

"My health and hygiene is so incredibly important to me and you can't have that without hot water. We still have to drive six and a half miles one way to go take a shower," Abbey said.

City officials in Jackson's Department of Public Works say the latest count is 133 homes and businesses without running water.

Many individuals make routine trips to the city water department to refill their water jugs,

Jackson Utility Director Todd Knepper says the situation is tough, but thus far the city has done everything it can, and hasn't found a permanent solution to the water problem.

"We've tried everything we know how to try and even some things we hadn't thought of before," said Knepper.

Knepper says the winter we've had made frozen pipes inevitable, and that other communities are in the same position, though Six News checked in with a few surrounding utilities, none have the home issues Jackson has.

After twenty-two years living within city limits, Abbey says she's considering moving out of Jackson.
