13-Year-Old Pianist Youngest To Win Competition

Posted: Updated:

HOWELL, Mich. (AP) - A 13-year-old Howell boy recently was named the youngest first-place winner in the Michigan Music Association's Open Pop Division.

The Livingston County Daily Press & Argus reports that John Tucker competed against 300 students up to age 18. He performed "Over the Rainbow."

The eighth-grader at Highlander Way Middle School in Howell says he first thought he had misheard when his name was announced as the winner.

He comes from a musical family. His grandmother is a professional fiddler and his mother plays piano and clarinet. Tucker also plays clarinet in the school band.

He has been playing piano for seven years and practices at least an hour a day.

The competition was held last month in Lansing.
