Lawmakers Honor Rose Bowl Champs Michigan State

Posted: Updated:

LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Lawmakers are honoring the Michigan State football team at the state capitol following the school's first Rose Bowl victory in over a quarter-century.

Coach Mark Dantonio calls the team's visit Thursday a "tremendous honor" and says he's glad to celebrate a "very, very special season." Michigan State won the Big Ten title and beat Stanford on Jan. 1 in the Spartans' first Rose Bowl appearance since 1988. The team ended the season 13-1.

Players and coaches also were to meet with Gov. Rick Snyder and Lt. Gov. Brian Calley.

Senate Minority Leader Gretchen Whitmer introduced the Spartans by joking that they accomplished something "a lot of people find impossible" by bringing both parties together. She says "we're all green today," including Michigan fans who are green with envy.
