Appeals Court Suspends Same Sex Marriage, Dozens Wed Earlier

MASON. MICH (WLNS) -

Couples flocked by the dozens to get married at the Ingham County courthouse today.

"I can't believe it. its crazy, it all happened so fast," said Jean Baker and Jen Loforese.

Baker and Loforese have been together for 6 years, and never thought this day would come.

"We were assuming that Michigan would be one of the last states to legalize marriage," said Loforese.

That's because in 2004, voters passed a proposal banning gay marriage in Michigan, but after the recent ruling today they were able to sign the papers.

"We've been together forever, we have 8 pets, we have a mortgage and we don't want this to be a thing anymore," said Loforese

But amid the smiles of this battle, the war is not over and perhaps is short lived.

Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette filed an emergency request to freeze the ruling that overturns the ban, which is now in affect until Wednesday.

The Catholic Bishops also issued a statement after the ruling yesterday saying:

"Marriage is and can only ever be a unique relationship solely between one man and one woman regardless of the decision of a judge or future electoral vote."

But more than 50 same-sex couples were still able to get married before the stay was issued, but those who had plans on waiting until Monday, may have to wait a bit longer.

As Joe Bissell and Justin Maynard wed in front of family and friends, they too were filled with happiness that their 15 year relationship was recognized by the state.

"My love is no less valid than anybody else's. Its just as real as a straight persons love," said Bissell.

"Its uncontionable to have to wait to marry your partner. But the fact that they get to marry in the great state of Michigan is wonderful," Barb Byrum Ingham County Clerk.

Although the fight may not be over, the couples still feel happiness and joy.

"Its amazing, I'm speechless, I still can't believe that we did what we just did," said Beth Bergh Dani Gimm who just got married.
