Culinary Students Compete in Lansing ProStart Competition

Posted: Updated:

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) -- Hundreds of high school students from across the state headed to Lansing Sunday to kick off the 13th annual Michigan ProStart Competition.

The contest is for students who are a part of the ProStart Culinary and Restaurant Management program. Throughout the day Sunday and Monday, nearly 200 students from 52 teams face off. They're taking part in competitions, like preparing a three-course meal in less than an hour and preparing a restaurant business plan.

"You're preparing the next generation of, not only owners and operators, but employees for your restaurant. The level of participation for the kids is always good and the members of the restaurant community are always very involved, too," said Brian Debano, the president and CEO of the Michigan Restaurant Association.

Winning teams from the Lansing competition head to the state invitations in Minneapolis this May.
