U. Of Michigan Ending Physical Education Degree

Posted: Updated:

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) - The University of Michigan is discontinuing its physical education degree and shifting its focus toward a new health and fitness major.

The Board of Regents approved plans for the School of Kinesiology to end the major during its meeting last week.

The physical education major at the school dates back to 1870, when it was offered for physical culture and hygiene.

Provost Martha Pollack told the regents that the program received "thorough review" before the suggestion to discontinue was made.

The University of Michigan launched its health and fitness major in fall 2013, after spending two years refining the curriculum. Eight students are enrolled in the physical education major. As of the fall, 15 students were enrolled in the health and fitness major.
