Bernero's Budget Projections Setting Stage For Balanced Budget

Posted: Updated:

LANSING, MI (WLNS) - Mayor Bernero has released his 2015 budget projections that if approved, will take effect July 1.

Last year the mayor's ideas and those of his financial health team didn't match up, but as 6 News Nick Perreault found out, this year the team's chair says the future is pointed in the right direction.

"We start this year without a deficit," said Mayor Bernero.

That's a promise Mayor Bernero promised last year.

"This budget sets the stage so that next year we are at a balanced or surplus budget."

However, his own appointed financial team challenged some of the decisions last year.

"I was fairly critical of the Mayor," said former Mayor and Financial Team Chairman, Dave Hollister.

Hollister truly believes 2015 is a promising new year. "I'm relieved that he made the tough decisions when he had to," said Hollister.

That starts with ear-marking $500,000 in pre-funding health care to offset the city's retirement and healthcare costs.

"It's an important statement to the community and it's an important step," said Hollister.

That step will help cut into the current the $25 million expense over the next year.

The former mayor also applauded Mayor Bernero's move to update outdated fire and police equipment and the idea of merging Lansing Schools and City Hall into one administration building.

"It's a joint effort between the schools and the city and that's the kind of collaboration we were looking for and I think he's going to follow through with that."

The annoucement is one that leaves the chair of the financial health team cautiously optimistic about the road ahead.

"For the first time the arrows are at least pointing in the right direction, he's making the decisions for long term stability and we appreciate it."

And hopefully that's a decision the city appreciates as well. In total the mayor's projected budget amounts to $118.5 million.

It's the first time the city's not facing a deficit since Bernero took office.
