Peace Corps Aims To Boost Recruiting, Diversity

Posted: Updated:

DETROIT (AP) - The leader of the Peace Corps is announcing plans to grow and further diversify its applicant pool and simplify the process for signing up.

Acting Director Carrie Hessler-Radelet says in remarks prepared for a speech Wednesday at the University of Michigan that the Peace Corps aims to double the number of applications while boosting recruiting in more racially and ethnically diverse communities.

Hessler-Radelet says the international service organization also is drastically shortening its application form and allowing prospects to apply for specific jobs and countries.

Then-U.S. Sen. John F. Kennedy came to the Ann Arbor school in 1960, weeks before being elected president. He challenged students to give two years of their lives and serve people of the developing world, a call leading to the creation of the Peace Corps.
