How To Protect Yourself Against The Norovirus

LANSING, MICH. (WLNS) -

The Kent County Health Department received dozens of calls and emails from customers that ate at the Beltine Bar in Grand Rapids, and people were reporting symptoms like nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

The situation is still under investigation, but although it is some ways away from Mid-Michigan, residents here should still be precautious.

"The flu is different than norovirus. If you have issues with your stomach where you have vomiting diarrhea, aches and pains associated with that, its typically an indicator of norovirus," said Angela Minicuci PIO, with The Michigan Department of Community Health.

Minicuci also adds that the department is keeping a close eye on what is going on in western Michigan, and if people that ate from that restaurant are from different areas of the state, then there is a chance of it circulating around to other areas.

"It spreads very quickly and very easily,:" said Minicuci. "Especially in areas like schools or nursing homes, places where people gather."

Doctors locally have also been seeing an increase in norovirus.

"In the last month I've maybe seen 10 people or something like that which isn't a great amount but I am seeing more than I have been seeing before," said Dr. Melody Angel with McLaren Greater Lansing Redicare South.

Dr. Melody adds that if you have norovirus, don't use hand sanitizer to try and  get rid of it, it won't do the job. Your best bet is to wash your hands with soap and water.

"The soap just helps to sort of loosen things up from your hand a little bit and then the water washes it way," said Dr. Angel. "The hand sanitizer on the other hand, alcohol doesn't kill it."

Officials also say if you are feeling weak or nauseated and if you think you might have norovirus, talk to your doctor.
