Identity Theft On The Rise

Posted: Updated:

(WLNS) - Identity scams are on the rise again and the IRS has tips about how you can protect yourself.

With the tax deadlines coming up you may receive a phone call from someone posing as an Internal Revenue Service worker.

They may even have the caller id of the IRS and will often ask victims to confirm their Social Security numbers.

Fraud callers also ask victims to wire money immediately with threats for consequences.

"People are manipulating caller id,they are calling pretending to be whether it is from the IRS, or perhaps from utility companies calling businesses demanding immediate payment or cutoff of utilities; they're making threats," said U.S. Attorney Patrick Miles Jr.

He adds, "So people are relying on the technology. They are relying on the caller id as a verification of who the caller is and you can't rely on that technology anymore."

Here is more information on frauds and scams.
