GM Dealers Scramble To Find Loaner Cars

Posted: Updated:

(WLNS) - General Motors CEO Mary Barra spent a second day answering lawmakers questions in Washington DC today, this time facing a Senate panel.

Barra faces questions on a deadly ignition switch issue and whether or not her company changed the switches in a way that would cover up the problems.

Some senators talked about the possibility of criminals charges against the company's executives if an investigation finds evidence of a cover up with the problems.

One solution General Motors is offering for customers affected by the recall is a free loaner car while theirs is getting fixed.

Jeff Crippen says a lot has changed since March 13 when G.M. officials announced they'd be offering free loaners to those on the laundry list of recalled vehicles.

"Initially it was pretty tight supply and everybody was scrambling for a rental car at that point", said Crippen.

A promise at first that'd looked difficult to deliver. Crippen's dealership even loaned out their rentals but still needed help.

"A couple of customers we said we'll call you as soon as we get a rental car available because they're were none available for a couple days", said Crippen.

Fortunately the Enterprise dealership next door came through.

"So far it's been Pontiacs and Saturns, we have had other calls from Chevrolet owners", adds Crippen.

Crippen says currently he has eight customers who've dropped off their cars

and found loaners while they wait for service.

Graff Chevrolet says working with Hertz helped them put more than a dozen customers in cars

and Crippen applauds the auto giants' effort.

"They're doing the best they can, they've tried to make it convenient for the customers. At this point we're going to do what we can to get the customers through this situation", he says.

So if you're waiting for parts which are expected later this month these dealerships say give them a ring. They'll make sure you have a set of wheels to get you on your way as you wait.
