National Distracted Driving Awareness Month Urges Drivers To Be Safe

Posted: Updated:

(WLNS) - It's National Distracted Driving Awareness Month and 6 News found some techy-solutions to help you focus on the road.

Let's admit it, we've all been distracted on the road, whether it's with our cell phones or other features in the car.

"Every second you look down, that's the second that's gonna take you to react if something's going on in front of you," said Deputy Josh Treat, Ingham County Traffic Patrol.

A new cell phone app released just in time for National Distracted Driving Awareness Month helps people focus on driving.

"While the app is active, you're not able to use your email or your sms messaging which is your text messaging while you're moving," said Craig Tuckets, CEO of Tucknologies.

Once you're going faster than 10 miles per hour the app will go into lock down mode. Once lock down mode is activated, you wont receive any notifications so you can focus on the road.

"We thought about additions to the car and stuff like this. And then working with Tucknologies, we thought about why not address the phone? And we went from that angle," said Waylon Sanford, CEO of PNP Technologies.

The app uses GPS signals from satellites to sense how fast you are driving.

It can even be paired with another device so that others can know when the app has been deactivated.

What the app doesn't do however is monitor where you are, making it more appealing to teen drivers with worried parents.

"What we don't do is location services. We want teen drivers to be teen drivers and let us into their space and their phone," said Sanford.

With Thumb Tied you can join in to spread awareness about distracted driving.

You can also, "be a leader. Don't get distracted from driving by things in your car," said Sanford.

Always remember that distractions are not just limited to cell phones.
