Project To Transform Two Detroit Railroad Viaducts

Posted: Updated:

DETROIT (AP) - Organizers of a project to transform the undersides of two railroad viaducts in Detroit say they're getting ideas submitted from Europe and Asia as well as across North America.

Proposals accepted by the Midtown Viaducts Public Art and Light Project will be funded up to $75,000 per viaduct. The application deadline is April 30.

The project is organized by Midtown Detroit Inc., a nonprofit planning and development organization that works in the area.

Originally constructed in 1934, the Second Avenue and Cass Avenue viaducts are near what's now called TechTown, a research and technology center.

Organizers are seeking artists, architects, designers, design firms and/or teams from eight southeastern Michigan counties: Genesee, Lapeer, Livingston, Macomb, Oakland, St. Clair, Washtenaw and Wayne. Outside proposals must include certain local involvement.
