MSU Students Host Vigil in Memory of "Princess Lacey"

Posted: Updated:

EAST LANSING, Mich. (WLNS)- When Danielle Bott and a few friends decided to paint the famous "Rock" on MSU's campus in honor of 8-year-old Lacey Holsworth, she wasn't sure how many students would be interested in joining her.

"It was just something that came to me while I was sitting at work. It was just something that I knew would be a very good symbol of support for [Lacey] and her family," said Bott.

A few social media shares later, hundreds of students became aware of the plan, and came to the Rock to sign their names and write messages of hope, support and thanks in honor of Lacey.

"As students we wanted to reach out and show that we cared.  Seeing her fighting, I remember thinking that's tough to see adults do, it was incredible to see how strong she was and how positive she was," said MSU Senior Nick Cervantes.

Many members of the basketball team, as well as Coach Tom Izzo came to show their support for the young girl who provided  them improbable inspiration.

"That helped us play some days when we weren't feeling great. We thought she's dealing with cancer, this is nothing we have to deal with," said MSU basketball forward Matt Costello.

Coach Tom Izzo addressed the crowd of a few hundred, describing conversations he had with Lacey's father Matt during her last days. Izzo said Lacey was smiling as she passed away, showing a toughness he isn't sure he or any of his players possess.

"Learn from her that you don't have to be the biggest, the strongest to be tough. You just have to have a mentality," Izzo said, "This year we beat a number one team. We beat a number one seeded team. We won a conference tournament. At the end of the year this team will be remembered for our togetherness with Lacey."
