Blackman Twp. Trustees Reduce Salaries To Original Amount

Posted: Updated:

BLACKMAN TWP, Mich. (WLNS) – Two trustees in Blackman Township voluntarily agreed Thursday night to reduce their salaries after the board voted last month to increase their pay by as much as $37,000.

Township Supervisor Peter Jancek and Clerk David Sercombe voted against the raises last month, and put forth resolutions Thursday to return their pay to its original amount. Jancek's reduced his salary from $49,260 to $24,000; Sercombe reduced his from $49,260 to $12,600.

"Now, the money we were being paid and did not ask for will remain in the township coffers instead of being paid to us," said Jancek. "One of the worst things about this was the fact that it was not budgeted for. We're in the middle of a budget cycle."

The salary for the township treasurer was also increased last month from $12,600 to $49,260. The woman who held that position, Sherry Brockie, has since resigned from the position and submitted a letter to the trustees saying she has moved out of the township. Brockie voted for her own pay increase.

Sheriff's officials say Brockie was also the subject of a criminal investigation after she was accused of taking files from the township office. According to Undersheriff Chris Kuhl, that investigation has been closed as there was no proof of wrongdoing. No charges were filed against Brockie.

Township officials say they are accepting applications for the vacant treasurer position through Tuesday.
