Stun Vest Could Be A Shock In Saginaw County

Posted: Updated:

(WLNS) - A vest acquired by the Saginaw County Sheriff's Department will come as a shock to unruly inmates.

The stun vest is intended to be put on potentially dangerous defendants to wear in court is a way to stop violent acts. Officers can activate the vest with a remote control and it would deliver up to 75,000 volts to the defendant's back for up to eight seconds.

An inmate wearing the vest will appear to have on normal clothes. Violent inmates are sometimes chained by the legs during a trial to provide some security and to avoid making the person appear guilty. The vest cost about $2,100 vest.

Undersheriff Robert Karl says the vest helps maintain security, "without saying, 'that's the guilty guy.'"
