Michigan Sea Grant Gets $5M For Great Lakes Work

Posted: Updated:

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) - The Michigan Sea Grant College Program is getting $5 million over four years to support Great Lakes research, education and public outreach efforts in the state.

Officials announced Friday that the program has received $2.1 million from the federal government, universities and partners for the first year of the $5 million award. That includes about $1.4 million from the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Jim Diana, director of Michigan Sea Grant and a professor at the University of Michigan School of Natural Resources and Environment, says in a statement that the funding will support training for businesses along the lakes, public outreach and three new research projects.

Michigan Sea Grant, a collaborative effort of the University of Michigan and Michigan State University, was established in 1969.
