Former Life O'Riley Resident Gets Used To New Life

Posted: Updated:

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) -- It has been just over a month since residents at Lansing's Life O'Riley Mobile Home Park were forced from their homes.

After leaving Life O'Riley, former resident Jewel Carrier moved into an apartment in south Lansing. There, he admires a view he didn't always have.

"You don't see junk here," he said.

For Carrier, his apartment in south Lansing is a much cleaner sight than his neighborhood at Life O'Riley, but it's a sight he's having trouble getting used to.

"I haven't adjusted to it. I haven't put my horns up yet, they told me I could put all this stuff up on the walls and I wanted to, but I haven't got around to that," Carrier said.

Sanitation issues forced the City of Lansing to condemn Life O'Riley in February. After living there for more than 60 years, city workers made Carrier move out March 7.

He recently signed a one-year lease at an apartment, but says he's having a tough time making ends meet.

"We don't eat right. We eat baloney sandwiches and a lot of that and stuff, you know. We pretend that we're tough," Carrier said.

At his new apartment, Carrier's rent is nearly triple what he spent at Life O'Riley. He's still paying on more than $500 in utility bills from his old home, too. It was a place Carrier moved to in 1953 and one he never thought he'd leave.

"That's where I started and that's where I ended. I didn't like the ending. They just stole it away from me," he said.
