Paper Tax Returns Must Be Postmarked By 5 P.M.

Posted: Updated:

LANSING, MI (WLNS) - If you haven't filed your taxes yet and you plan to do so on paper through the mail, time is running out.

A spokeswoman with the U.S. Postal Service says your tax return envelope must be post marked by 5 p.m. April 15. If it's marked after 5 p.m. it will be counted late. The reason for the change away from the traditional staying open until 11:59 p.m. is due to processing facilities.

The only two processing facilities remaining in Michigan are in Detroit and Grand Rapids. For the Lansing area the truck is leaving at 5:30 p.m. to deliver mail to Grand Rapids. So, all taxes must be at the post office by 5 p.m.

The deadline to file taxes online is midnight. To file online, click: IRS Free File

If you have to file Lansing city taxes, the deadline is April 30.
