Jackson College Lays Off Faculty Due To Hole In Budget

Posted: Updated:

JACKSON, MI (WLNS) - On Monday night administrators at Jackson College made the decision to layoff members of its faculty because of a hole in the school's budget.

As 6 News Joe Khalil reports faculty reps are understandably upset and say the school is sacrificing the integrity of its teaching rather than looking for alternatives to save money.

As the economy gradually improves many who returned to school have stopped paying tuition and rejoined the workforce.

"If you're looking at losing $9-10 million out of a $50 million budget, it is significant," said Cindy Allen, VP of Administration, Jackson College.

Since 2009 the number of credit hours students paid for at Jackson College decreased by about a third.

That's why Cindy Allen says on Tuesday the school laid off seven faculty members, saving $900,000.

"The college is definitely looking ahead to build a sustainable college," said Allen.

Members of the faculty at Jackson College say ultimately the administration is sacrificing the quality of education for its students.

"I can't say it any plainer, cutting faculty does not serve the mission at this college."

Faculty Association President Alana Tuckey says enrollment has decreased, but the real budget problems come from the school adding administrators. Jackson College has added 11 administrators in the in the past 10 years while cutting 15 professors.

"Now we have less faculty and more administration," said Tuckey.

Reporter: "And administration costs money?"

Tuckey: "Of course."

"Last night the board approved $400,000 for furniture in a new dorm. So they chose to cut faculty at the same time they choose to vote in furniture."

Allen says funding for projects is separate from employee costs, but as new buildings pop up on campus while familiar faces receive layoff notices staff members feel slighted.
