No Vote On Michigan Road Funds

Posted: Updated:

LANSING, MI (WLNS) - There was no voting Thursday, but plenty of talking at the state capitol about a new way to fix Michigan's roads.

6 News Capitol Correspondent Tim Skubick takes a look at what all the talking was about.

Reporter: "When you knocked on doors were people clammering, telling you to fix the roads?"

Lawmaker: "Oh absolutely, yes they were."

Members of the house transportation committee were back in the saddle after a three week spring hiatus. The house republican speaker wants them to move quickly on his $500 million road fix plan.

But there was no voting today as members were just getting up to speed on this.

State Representative Wayne Schmidt, (r), House Transportation Chair: "This is why we have the committee process so that everything can be reviewed. "

Reporter: "When will you vote?

Representative Schmidt: "When everyone is satisfied with the answers and they've had a chance to review speaker Boldger's proposal."

Everyone is looking for a bi-partisan vote, but are the democrats there yet?

State Representative Marilyn Lane, (d), Vice Chair, Transportation: "Yeah. weve worked on a lot of this. I think it's still in concept form."

The speaker was hoping that angry motorists would turn up the heat on lawmakers during the break. This legislator says he heard "don't raise my taxes if you're going to fix the roads."

State Representative Charles Smiley (D), Burton: "Absolutely. They are definitely opposed to raising the taxes, registration fees or fuel tax. Absolutely."

The package could get a vote within a week or two, it does not raise taxes to raise the $500 million.

The speaker gave it another nudge. "Just stop talking and start doing," said State Representative Jase Bolger (r), House Speaker.
