Dept. Of Education Awards Lansing $715,000

Posted: Updated:

LANSING, MI (WLNS) - The U.S. Department of Education has awarded 67 grants, more than $33 million to local education agencies all across the country.

It's part of an effort to enhance physical education and nutrition programs. Lansing is one of two districts in Michigan to receive the grant and 6 News Nick Perreault is looking at how they'll spend that money.

"Great news for us, but now we've got to figure out what to do with it."

What to do with $715,000, that's Lansing's share from a federal grant for physical education and nutrition.

"The goal would be to try and do something at one pre-k-3, one 4-6 and one high school," said Peter Spadafore, Lansing School Board President.

That could mean good news for those elementary physical education teachers who were laid off last year.

Spadafore says discussion could include putting money towards those positions. He says the schoolboard has to be cautious when choosing how to spend grant money.

but helpful to have in yet another budget year where the school board is looking at cuts

"When the grant money runs out whatever program you've implemented you have to find the general fund for so we're going to ask the superintendent as with every grant to be very strategic about how we do that."

It's a small part of the districts roughly $140 million budget, but a good start at the beginning of budget talks.
