Historic Lansing Site To Get Big Money Facelift

Posted: Updated:

(WLNS) - Lansing's mayor has announced that the administrative building for the former school for the blind will undergo a $15 million renovation.

There's boarded up windows and graffiti near the door, but that won't be there for long because the building has a bright future.

"This is a gorgeous, wonderful, really incomparable building that was on its way to ruin. On its way to being lost forever," said Virg Bernero, Lansing Mayor.

The Abigail Building, built in 1915, served as the administrative building for the former School for the Blind.

A a partnership between the city and local investors will help turn this building into 44 units of affordable housing.

"What we want is a walk-able, bike-able, livable neighborhood. That is a great entrance into old town as well," said Mayor Bernero.

The transformation comes with its challenges.

"It's a challenge of what we call the capital stack. The different monies coming in from different agencies and the private sector as well, putting that together is something that we always look forward to," said Gerry Haan, CEO, G.A. Haan Development.

The timeline for the entire renovation project is approximately three years. The first year will be dedicated to preparation and the next two will be dedicated to the actual construction of the building.

"This is going to put this whole area to the next level, and on par with the Old Town commercial district," said Eric Schertzing, Ingham County Treasurer.

But the Abigail's move into the future doesn't mean it will forget about its past.

The renovation will preserve the building's architecture so it can embrace its new purpose and celebrate its history as well.

The city will also work towards cleaning up the area around the building to create a more welcoming environment for the upcoming residential area.
