Temporary Move Planned For Lansing Police Department

Posted: Updated:
LANSING, MI (WLNS) - The Lansing Police Department's north precinct will be moving to Lansing's south-side, at least for a while.

City officials as well as those from the Lansing School District outlined an agreement to relocate LPD's patrol and investigative divisions to the school district's Hill Center.

The city's lease at the Motor Wheel Complex, north of downtown, expires at the end of August.

Mayor Virg Bernero believes the move is a "winning alternative and (is) mutually beneficial for all parties."

"When we look at the mission statement of the Lansing Police Department, it's to maintain order, preserve public safety, and to foster a better quality of life for those that live work and visit in this city. With this plan, this facility will accomplish that mission," said Mike Yankowski, Chief, Lansing Police Dept.

As part of the agreement the city will make $800,000 worth of improvements to the Hill Center and in exchange about 87,000 square feet of space will be leased to the city without charge for the first two years.
