Convicted Killer Who Escaped Prison Facing Kidnapping, Carjacking Charges

Posted: Updated:
(WLNS) - The convicted killer who escaped from an Ionia prison on Super Bowl Sunday and was found a day later was back in court Wednesday.

Before Michael Elliot escaped from prison he was serving multiple life sentences for the murder of four people.

If you remember back to February, not only did Elliot escape from the Ionia correctional facility, he grabbed a woman at knife point, stole her car and fled to Indiana.

Elliot then led police on a multi-state chase. An Ionia County judge read him the latest charges against him on Wednesday. The charges included kidnapping and carjacking, both carry maximum sentences of life in prison. He was also charged with escaping from prison, which in itself is a felony. He could do five years for that.

Elliot has maintained his innocence for the murders back in 1994 since his original trial. Now even if by some chance new evidence were to arise that proved his innocence, he's still facing these multiple life sentences for the escape. Corrections officials say his case will not be reviewed. Elliot will be back in court for a pre-trial exam in May.
