DELTA TWP., MI (WLNS) - A domestic disturbance call went out in Delta Township in the middle of the night, but the investigation soon changed directions. Eaton County Sheriff's officials discovered a suspicious series of chemicals and launched into another investigation.
6 News was on the scene all day. When the police arrived at the scene at 2 a.m., they were responding to what was initially a domestic disturbance near the Lansing mall.
After more than 9 hours, the police are still there, but the investigation has a new focus they came across.
“A series of commercially available chemicals usually used as precursors to drug labs or explosive devices,” said Lt. Jeff Campbell.
The chemicals weren't combined and there was no immediate threat to people in the area. However, the Eaton County Sheriff's office called the hazardous materials team to identify one other unknown substance in the apartment. “We're going to take the unknown substance, remove it for testing, along with the chemicals that we found and take it with us as well.”
Heavy police presence surrounded the area near the Village Green Apartment Complex until 2 p.m. Thursday, a full 12 hours after it started..
“Basically, where we're at is that it's just a series of chemicals that could be assembled into a drug lab or an explosive device, they’re not considered dangerous in their current form, at this point we're still ongoing with the investigation.”
Even after the heavy police presence all day, police are remaining tight-lipped about what they found. The complex is clear and no one was asked to evacuate.
