One Of Three US Doctors Killed In Afghanistan Had Michigan Ties

Posted: Updated:
(WLNS) - A horrific and deadly attack in Afghanistan is being felt in Michigan.

Three doctors from the U.S. are dead and one nurse injured after a security guard began shooting.

One of the doctors killed in the attack, Dr. Jerry Umanos, is the father of Grand Rapids Police Officer Ben Umanos.  Dr. Umanos graduated from medical school at Wayne State University and completed his residency at Children's Hospital of Michigan. Officer Umanos has been on the Grand Rapids force since January of this year.

Officials say a U.S. pediatrician came to the gates of the hospital to meet with a group of doctors when the security officer shot them.

Afghanistan's Minister of Health calls it a brutal attack.

The gunman was also hurt and is currently in police custody.
