Blackman Twp. Residents Expected To File Lawsuit

Posted: Updated:
BLACKMAN TOWNSHIP MICH. (WLNS) - The mess in Blackman Township continues, and residents are fighting back, seeking legal action.

A few of the board members decided to vote to double and quadruple their pay back in March. Since then two members resigned: Sherry Brockie and Paula Clingerman. While two still hold their positions: Mark Singer and Betty Brockie.

The pay raises have been rescinded for the time being, but people still want officials to be held responsible.

"Its something that shouldn't be happening. it's a disgrace to the township," said Mike Swope, resident of Blackman Township.

So now now legal action appears in the works against four blackman township officials, alleging they violated the open meetings act--and conspired behind closed doors to discuss the pay raises that hiked their salaries.

"And there's no way that they should be conspiring like this, outside of board hours," said Swope.

Some residents say that filing the lawsuit was the only way to teach the board members a lesson, while others think that taking this kind of legal action is a step too far.

"I disagree with the lawsuit because i want what's positive for the township and i believe there comes a time where you can over do it," said Dan Hawkins, former township supervisor.

Whether for or against a lawsuit---the legal action doesn't come as a shock to many--including blackman township attorney Eric White.

"Given allegations ive seen raised by others at the opening meetings since then, i'm not surprised that this litigation is going to be filed," said White.

The lawsuit is expected to be filed tomorrow in Jackson Circuit Court.

We tried to reach out to Betty brockie and Mark singer--the two members still on the board--but they have not returned our calls.
