Battlefield Brawl Is A Big Hit

Posted: Updated:
(WLNS) - If you heard there was a *brawl* in your neighborhood you might not expect it to be a good situation. But that wasn't the case for the Battlefield Brawl this weekend.

It's an *annual event* that's a fund-raiser, a life-saver and a battle worth fighting.

Teams in full uniform, referees, it's even got the gritty name but the Battlefield Brawl is about a lot more than flag football.

"Back in 1993 i had a cancerous brain tumor that almost took my life," says Justin Caine, co-founder of The Battlefield Brawl.

Justin Caine was only ten years old.

It was a battle Justin won.

Now in his thirties and owner of a video marketing company Justin wanted to give back to kids facing tough times and illness as he did.

"But I didn't want to do another 5k or golf outing--i wanted to do something unique. I've always been very passionate about football. I could never play it though. I wasn't allowed to do contact sports.," Caine explained.

So *flag* football was the natural choice and when Justin met some friends who are as passionate about football as he is Battlefield Brawl was born.

Co-founder TJ Duckett explains, "It's so special for me because a lot of the guys i played with--they're here. They get a chance to come out--do this again--and raise money for a cause and interact in the community--that's what it's about."

The annual event's raised more than fifty thousand dollars for children with life threatening illness in its five years. This year's recipient is the Oldham Project Kids

TJ and Justin compete every year.

And about the name: Battlefield Brawl?

"That's the thing. Why not? it's a fight. Fights aren't always bad. Fights arent always things that destroy. You have to fight for yourself and fight for your life," says Duckett.

TJ and Justin are doing their part to give children a fighting chance.
