Michigan Graduation Rate Remains Below US Average

Posted: Updated:
LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Michigan's 76 percent rate for high school graduation is below the national average, and the Detroit Public Schools rate is even lower.

A national report by America's Promise Alliance and others says the U.S. posted a record 80 percent graduation rate in 2012. But Michigan's slight increase from 74.3 percent in 2011 didn't move it out of the bottom third of all states.

Detroit Public Schools' 65 percent graduation rate placed in the bottom half of comparable city districts. The Detroit district is 74.9 percent low-income students and had a rate similar to the 64 percent graduation rate for low-income students across Michigan.

Michigan's graduation rate gap for family income levels is one of the widest in the country.
