Open Carry Supporters Rally At Capitol

Posted: Updated:
LANSING, MI (WLNS) – The issue of gun rights took center stage in Lansing Tuesday. School kids and gun owners were at the state Capitol Tuesday for “Open Carry Day."

As 6 News Capitol Correspondent Tim Skubick reports, everyone had a say.

“If we don’t stand up for our rights, whether it be second amendment, first amendment, or whatever it is, we’re gonna lose them,” said Tim Miller, gun owner, Waterford.

Several hundred gun owners with weapons on full display rallied on the Capitol lawn and inside the Capitol at the same time school kids were on tour. In fact six school groups that were scheduled to be at the Capitol canceled because of the guns in full view.

Gun opponents argue whenever guns are around, safety is at risk. This senator and mom of two says guns make her nervous

“People who are upset with government all the time down here and when they are brandishing weapons and getting boisterous, I think it makes everyone nervous,” said State Senator Gretchen Whitmer, democratic leader.

But this gun owner argues, with the proper instructions, guns are safe.

“As gun owners, we're not knuckleheads, we know what safe handling of firearms is and most gun owners by en large teach their children safe-handling of firearms. And most time negligent discharge or accidental discharge of firearm is from just not paying attention to what you’re doing,” said Walter Frantz, gun owner, Pontiac.

This mom was touring the Capitol and told her kids not to be afraid.

Reporter: “So the guns did not bother you?”

Mom: “No,” said Tracey Eveningred.

Reporter: “Anybody afraid of guns?”

Kids: “No, not really.”

Demonstrators want gun owners to carry weapons virtually everywhere, including in so called gun-free zones such as sports arenas, schools, and churches.

“A gun is a symbol of freedom, more guns equal more freedom, so when people ask me, like, when I open carry like this, they say ‘you got enough guns on you?’ To me that’s like saying you got enough freedom?” You can never have enough freedom,” said Omar Collins, gun owner, Detroit.

There is legislation to allow guns everywhere, but after a school shooting last year, that was placed on hold.
