Body Donation Law Changes Pass Michigan House

Posted: Updated:
LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Any accredited Michigan medical school could receive dead body donations under legislation that's passed the state House.

Michigan residents can currently donate their bodies to one of three older medical schools, which allocate some donations to other schools and hospitals. Michigan's three new medical schools want to receive bodies independently to promote donations in their areas and streamline the process.

The bill unanimously passed the House on Tuesday and now goes to the Senate. It requires that medical schools have a mortuary science licensee on staff in order to receive body donations.

The number of medical schools in Michigan doubled from three to six in recent years, largely in response to a shortage of doctors in many areas of the state.
