Auto Shop Closes After Decades

Posted: Updated:
(WLNS) - Come June 30th Frank Malcangi  will be out of work.

The auto shop where he's worked since 1957 will soon close to make room for a church.

As Frank's time comes to an end he says the legacy he leaves behind is about more than just fixing cars.

Whether he's working with his hands or sliding under a machine it's hard to believe Frank Malcangi  is about to turn 81

Malcangi says, "I always considered a job something we don't want to do, I have an occupation"

Frank's been in this spot off Cedar since the 50's - as a mechanic specializing in Mercedes Benz.

He adds, "I always looked forward to coming to this garage to take something that doesn't work and use what i've been taught

how to repair it."

And like the sign on his wall says much like any job for success you have to start from the bottom and work your way up.

"I've learned to take the good at what people do or explain to you and apply it and take the bad and throw it away," says Malcangi.

Now Frank says despite working at this garage for close to six decades, countless cars and customers, Frank says it was never about the money or the cars really, but rather about a simple life lesson that everyone can learn from."

"Discipline touches everything from morning till dark," adds Malcangi.

Discipline to get the job done and take responsibility for your work.

"I says my customer is my boss, if I don't do what he wants me to do they don't come back," insists Malcangi.

But Rod Schultz has been - for five years and says there's nobody quite like Frank.

"It's about being a craftsman, he's the heart surgeon of the mechanics, I'd admire him," says Schultz.

Frank says it's all about staying focused and solving the task at hand.

"It gives you fulfillment within. That is if you're willing to roll up your sleeves," Malcangi concludes.

Frank's next task---retirement.
