More Big Businesses Call For Civil RIghts For LGBT Community

Posted: Updated:

(WLNS) - They are some of the heavy hitters in the business community including Consumers Energy, Michigan Blue Cross Blue Shield, ATT, Dow Chemical and the list goes on.

State Senator Rebekah Warren says, "It's a wonderful day."

tTis senator has been working on including the gay community in the civil rights law since 2006 and having the business community joining the lobbying effort, she says, is good news.

"This is the best climate we've ever seen. We have people on both sides of the aisles on changing this and guaranteeing equal rights in housing and employment," added Warren.

But not everybody is there yet.

This lawmaker does not believe workers should be fired because of their sexual orientation but he is not ready to vote yes on the bill.

Rep. Ken Kurtz says. "I believe we are all created in the image of God and He knows each of of us. I'm fair to all and I will remain there."
Reporter: "So are you ready to vote yes?".
Re. Kurtz: "I want to look and see the wording of the vote."

Lisa Brown adds, "I think of what year it is and i feel some people are still in the dark ages."

The Senate GOP leader is not sure how he will vote.

Sen. Randy Richardville says, "I thnk we have to take a hard look at that. I haven't made a final decision."
Reporter: "Do you believe folks should be fired if they are gay?"
Senator: "Absolutely not. "
Reporter: "So why not vote on it?"
Senator:  "Because its just not one group. There are other people who need protection too not just one group."

The governor has not taken a position and is waiting to see what lawmakers do.

And the businesses will be watching, too.
