Unique Art Exhibit Promotes Adoption

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) -- May is National Foster Care Month and for thousands of Michigan children, foster care is all they know.

In an effort to raise awareness and to promote adoptions, Sunday St. Vincent Catholic Charities is hosting a special event to help find families for foster kids in need. For the fifth time, the non-profit organization is putting on an art show at Old Town's Absolute Gallery. Posters will showcase the 11 teens up for adoption, and the families they hope to be a part of one day.

"I love it when I see them progress, knowing the situations that they come from and it's just a blessing every single day to work with these people," said Whitney Banks, the Adoption Recruiter at St. Vincent Catholic Charities.

Adoption recruiter Whitney Banks came up with the event three years ago, and workers say it's a success.

"We actually we able to identify a family who came to an art exhibit last year, saw one of the children speak and decided actually to pursue going forward with adoption. So, we're really seeing that all the hard work is really paying off and obviously that's the goal, to find families," said Tamra Johnson, the Community Relations and Marketing Director at St. Vincent Catholic Charities.

Banks says these kids didn't choose their current circumstances, and that drew her to this career.  She calls herself their support system and is there to give guidance and love.

"I tell them...let me carry your burdens, whatever you're facing, whatever you're going through, put them on me, share that burden with me and that way I can help you try to navigate whatever it is you have going on," Banks said.

As Banks carries their burdens, she also celebrates their blessings. She's hopeful Sunday's event will help find forever families for the foster kids.

The event starts at 2 p.m. at the Absolute Gallery on Grand River in Old Town.
