Lansing Celebrates Third Annual Marathon

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) -- After months of training and hundreds of miles under their belt, Sunday more than 1,000 people pounded the pavement in Lansing during the city's third annual marathon.

Amongst applause and crowd cheers, Brian Goodwin crossed the Lansing Marathon finish line and became the city's newest champion.

"I've ran 10 marathons and this is the first one I've won, so you check that off your list of things to do, so it was cool," Goodwin said.

The Dearborn Height's runner cruised through the 26.2 mile course in 2 hours and 48 minutes. An impressive time, but one Goodwin says he's topped before.

"Eh, i wanted to be about 8 minutes faster, 10 minutes faster, but it was a little hillier than I thought and a little windier than I'd hoped, so those things played into it, but it's alright," he said.

Aside from the wind, Sunday's weather made for a beautiful run through the capital city. From downtown to Old Town, this year race organizers created a new course that runners finished in front of the capitol.

Jodi South knows the scenery well, on top of winning the woman's race, the Lansing resident ran her best time yet.

"I feel like a good representation for our city and it's just wonderful to be out here, there's so many people that were supportive, total strangers cheering me on the whole way and i'm just proud to be part of the city," South said.

After crossing the finish line, runners were handed 2014 Lansing Marathon medals. For marathon runners, it's a mark of achievement following months of training for race day. "You work so hard for something, to make the accomplishment is unbelievable," South said.

Sunday's accomplishment qualifies the Lansing Marathon champions for Boston next year. While they're excited for the respected race, they say they'd love to run Lansing again.

On top of those who ran the marathon Sunday, many also took part in the half marathon and six person marathon relay.
