ORLEANS TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - Authorities say a man has been fatally shot after leading police on a chase through two western Michigan counties and opening fire on officers.

According to numerous reports the man, whose name wasn't immediately released, was shot in a field in Ionia County's Orleans Township, about 25 miles northeast of Grand Rapids. The chase took place Sunday in Ionia and Montcalm counties.

Police say the man was pronounced dead at the scene. It wasn't immediately clear whether he was killed by officers or shot himself.

The chase started Sunday afternoon in Ionia County following a domestic violence incident. Police used stop sticks to disable his vehicle and he fled, carrying a gun. Police say he fired at officers while being chased on foot. No officers were injured.
