Tanker Spills 10,000 Gallons Of Asphalt On I-96 Near US-127

Posted: Updated:
(WLNS) - An early morning I-96 east truck crash sent two people to the hospital and shutdown multiple lanes.

It happened just after 5:00 a.m. Monday, one mile east of the I-96 and US-127 interchange. A South Lyon tanker truck carrying a load of liquid asphalt lost control and rolled over.
Shortly after a second vehicle crashed into the truck.

“When the deputies arrived on scene, they didn't know what kind of product they were dealing with, but after we got some more information, we found out it was a non-flammable, non-hazardous product,” said Sergeant Weiss.

A slick coat of liquid asphalt covered the grass and gave off a foul odor, blocking traffic. The truck spilled about 10,000 gallons of asphalt.
Two people were injured and taken to local hospitals. Their conditions are not known at this time.

Around 7:23 a.m. all lanes on westbound I-96 re-opened, but as of 2 p.m. only one lane on I-96 east is open.

As for the environment, the spilled asphalt started to harden into chunks as soon as it left the tanker, making it easier for crews to clear the median. The department of environmental quality says cleanup crews aim to complete the task by sun-down Monday.
