Lansing Police Continue Investigation Of Northside Shooting Death

Posted: Updated:
(WLNS) – Lansing police received a call to a home around 11:30 p.m. Sunday and inside they found a man who was not responding.

Police say 30-year-old Jo VanBuren was inside the home when a man walked in and shot him. It happened in the 1300 block of Roosevelt Ave.

“A suspect entered the house, the suspect confronted our victim and subsequently shot him and then left on foot,” said Officer Robert Merritt, Lansing Police Department.

When police got to the home they found VanBuren un-responsive. Medical examiners later pronounced him dead at the hospital. A neighbor across the street from VanBuren says news of the shooting shocked him.
It surprised me that my kids were out here running around and there's someone out here running around with a gun,” said Chico, neighbor.

Police don't believe the shooting was random, but won't say why. Chico says he often saw people visiting the home and felt suspicious.

"They're either selling something there or buying something there because midnight, daytime, middle of the day, nighttime, people are always over there knocking on the door."

Police are taking those facts into consideration and hope to have answers soon, including who pulled the trigger.

"You've got to take all information, and once you start getting it, you start piecing it out,” said Officer Merritt.

Although police say this year’s first confirmed homicide is one too many, it’s an improvement from 2013. Four homicides took place in Lansing at this time last year. "It's just a testament to this department and where we're at in 2014 with only having one homicide,” said Officer Merritt.
