Controlled Burn Today At East Lansing Park

Posted: Updated:

EAST LANSING (WLNS) – Don't be alarmed if you see fire in East Lansing's Hawk Nest Park today. A prescribed ecological burn of the natural areas at the park is taking place, beginning this morning and ending by mid to late afternoon.

Residents surrounding Hawk Nest Park have been notified and a public meeting was held on April 17 to discuss the process. Community members are advised that there will be some smoke in the area as a result of the burn and signs have been placed in the area indicating that the park is closed. Community members should stay away from the area while the burn is taking place.

The City’s prairie maintenance contractor, Native Connections, will conduct the burn, with the assistance of PlantWise Restoration and support from the East Lansing Fire Department.

Prescribed ecological burning is a natural management practice that is essential to the continued growth and success of prairies. It removes dead thatch, combats invasive plants, prevents succession of plant material and stimulates root growth. Additionally, the seeds of some plants required the heat of a prescribed ecological burn to germinate.
