Car Theft Ring Probe Leads To Arrest Of Man

Posted: Updated:

DETROIT (AP) - One man has been arrested in a string of car thefts in which vehicles are broken into and pushed to another location where their tires and rims are removed.

Detroit police Sgt. Vernal Newson says the 28-year-old man was arrested Wednesday after being identified from surveillance video. He is described as the leader of an organized ring responsible for dozens of car thefts call "push steals."

Video shows the man and another suspect driving up to several cars in a stolen minivan. They break into the cars and disable the gears. The minivan's driver then pushes the cars as the other man steers them.

Newson says Ford Fusions are popular "push steal" targets for thieves after their 17-inch rims. A set of four stolen rims can fetch several hundred dollars.
