(WLNS) - General Motors announced a new expansion to their product line Thursday. It's the 2015 ATS Coupe, built right here at Lansing’s Grand River plant.
It’s set to hit showroom floors later this summer and as 6 News Nick Perreault explains it's a car that has many excited about the road ahead.
This sneak peek has been two years in the making. "It's a lighter, leaner, lower car, it's more nimble and more responsive.” Responsive, something Launch Manager Mark Dickman says customers can be about this product.
"We fully expect this to be the same quality level, performance level, where we are going to be in the running with those great and honorable awards that are out there,” said Mark Dickman, Lansing Grand River Launch Manager.
It's the first ATS Coupe of its kind and it’s equipped with a new emblem, interior and lights, with similar design as car of the year award winning ATS. "Let's do this one at a time and we'll make this as good as the rest.”
UAW local 652 Vice President Randy Freeman says customers can expect top quality with this new 2015 ATS Coupe. "GM designs them, we will build them good that's just the way Lansing is.”
"When we are making cars that are selling that are hot, that are winning awards, that's good for our economy,” said Virg Bernero, Mayor of Lansing. And Mayor Bernero says that will put money in workers pockets and surrounding businesses.
"I don't know what do you think, one new mayorial vehicle, looks pretty cool, never say never, is that in the budget, hope springs eternal Nick.”
But the mayor and those interested will have to wait till the end of summer for this ride to hit the showroom floor.
A price tag on the ATS Coupe hasn't been set yet, but it hopes to compete with similar Mercedes and BMW models. A $50,000 check was presented to Capital Area United Way as part of the presentation.
