Michigan House Passes $450 Million More For Roads

Posted: Updated:
LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Michigan lawmakers have voted to spend $450 million more a year to repair deteriorating roads and bridges.

The state House on Thursday approved a wide-ranging plan that redirects money from the state's general fund to transportation. It also changes how Michigan taxes fuel at the pump to ensure an inflationary boost in revenue as people drive less and buy more fuel-efficient vehicles.

The legislation now goes to the Senate. Lawmakers call the move a positive first step while acknowledging it only provides a third of what Republican Gov. Rick Snyder says is needed.

Some Democrats against the bill say much more money is needed and question why some of the increase isn't going to public transit. Other critics say shifting money from elsewhere in the budget will hurt other programs.
