Firefighters Battle Flames in Meridian for 45 Minutes

Posted: Updated:
HASLETT, MICH. (WLNS) -  Investigators are trying to figure out what sparked a fire at the Benson hills Apartment complex this afternoon.

Fire-fighters were called to the scene around 12:30 this afternoon when neighbors saw smoke coming from the building.

Officials say the flames sparked in an apartment on the third floor then spread to five other apartments. Two of them are a total loss.

East Lansing assisted Meridian Township in dousing the flames. It took the departments roughly 45 minutes to put out the fire.

“It’s a pretty good fire,” said Bill Priese, Training/EMS Chief for Meridian Township Fire Department. “You add in the fact that it’s on the third floor, crews have to get up to the third floor. Obviously we have an aerial here to get up and cut a hole into the roof so that change the dynamics of things.”

No one was hurt in the fire. Officials haven't said exactly how many people lost their homes, but  according to the Red Cross,  everyone affected has been placed in other units within the complex.
