Habitat For Humanity Builds New Home in St. Johns

Posted: Updated:
ST. JOHNS, MICH (WLNS) - Rebbeca Weber never thought she'd own a house---let alone build it.

“My fiancee would never expect me to build the frames for the house and that's what I’ve been doing all morning,” said Weber.

She and other volunteers are breaking ground for her brand new home. It all started when Weber was having trouble finding an affordable place to live, so she applied for help from Habitat for Humanity, and was chosen.

“Can somebody pinch me...this doesn't feel real after doing rentals for so many years,” said Weber.

Now Weber's dream is a reality, and is building walls of her home with the help of some female hands--in part of National Women Build Week.

“You've got some very capable women that are swinging some real powerful hammers here today,” said Judy Emmons, State Senator for the 33rd district.

More than 30 volunteers came to work on Weber's new home today, many of them women who have never met her before, but are just here donating their time.

“Watching an entire group of people from all walks of life coming together to make something beautiful to make a whole new lifetime for a family,” said L. Quinn Lincoln-Keon, Executive Director for Habitat for Humanity of Clinton County.

For Weber, the labor is hard work--but building your own home is very rewarding.

“I’m just excited to have a house. it's a really good feeling,” said Weber.
