Letter Carriers Food Drive Helps Mid-Michigan Families

Posted: Updated:

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) -- As the weather warms up and kids get out of school, the shelves at local food banks take a hit. In an effort to help, local letter carriers and volunteers came together Saturday to collect food donations from our community.

It's all part of the 22nd annual national event, Stamp Out Hunger.

Marlana Bernheisel's delivered mail to this neighborhood for more than a decade, but Saturday she says the route means a little more than normal.
On top of mail, Bernheisel's picking up bags of non-perishable food items people set on their porches to donate to those in need.

"Today's really special because it gives us a chance to do something for the community and to give back. The community is giving, but, you know, we're doing a little extra," she said.

This giving is part of the nationwide food drive Stamp Out Hunger. It's the biggest single-day food drive in the nation and one Bernheisel says she and her dad never miss.

Throughout the day, mail carriers and volunteers take the food collected on their routes and bring it to local post offices. There the food is sorted and then taken to the Greater Lansing Food Bank.

"Everywhere around our nation people are donating food, and because of our great friends at the post office, this is really going to make a big difference for people in need," said Greater Lansing Food Bank Executive Director Joe Wald.

In just hours, Bernheisel collected truckloads of food, and she's just one mail carrier of many.

"In the past 10 years over 800,000 pounds [of food] has been collected in the Lansing area," she said.

Last year, the food drive fed mid-Michigan families more than 100,000 meals. It's a feat Bernheisel feels good about, and she thanks the generous people on her route for helping to make it possible.
