(WLNS) - It's known as one of the most informal ways to communicate:  texting.

But now hostage negotiators are using it to diffuse unpredictable situations.

The use of text has increased in the last five years and prompted new and specialized training for negotiators.

People who oppose the new training though say that a person's tone is lost within a typed message.

And that could lead to mis-interpretations or delays.
