Deadly Day: Rite Aid & East Lansing Shootings

Posted: Updated:

(WLNS) - Police say just after 11 this morning a gunman walked in and shot and killed an employee and then went on to shoot another man less than an hour later.

A routine morning at this Lansing Rite Aid turns violent when a man walks in..

Pulls out a gun and shoots and kills an employee inside.

"When officers made entry inside the residence, or inside the business, they located a male subject in his mid-30s, deceased with multiple gun shots," said Lansing Police Chief Mike Yankowski.

Lansing police say the man who fired the fatal shots then ran from the store.

Just minutes later the East Lansing police department got a call about more shots fired on the 18-hundred block of Coolidge Road...

Which is just a mile from where the first homicide happened.

There...East Lansing police say they found the suspect along with a man in his 30s who police believe the suspect shot multiple times.

"He was treated at the scene and then transported to sparrow hospital where he was later pronounced dead," said East Lansing Police Captain Jeff Murphy.

Police say the suspect stayed inside the home and a stand-off began.

Authorities brought in a SWAT team and worked for nearly four hours to negotiate with the suspect

Murphy adds, "They made verbal contact with him through a window and within a short period of time he gave up and came out."

Once the man came out of the home authorities arrested him.

They believe he's the only person responsible for the shootings that left two men dead.

Although the suspect is in custody authorities continue to investigate the crime scenes..

And they work to answer the many questions that remain.

"Crime scene investigators will be working through the night to try to piece this together, figure out how this could happen, what triggered this particular person to have multiple shootings."
