Burton Police Get 2 Free Surplus Humvees From Military

Posted: Updated:

BURTON, Mich. (AP) - The past winter's heavy snowfall convinced Burton police they needed to beef up their fleet with two 1987 AMC General military surplus Humvees.

Reportedly the department recently acquired the 5,960-pound black vehicles through a program run by the Defense Logistics Agency's Disposition Services. The program provided more than $449 million in military equipment in 2013 to law enforcement.

The Burton department has used the program in the past to acquire helmets, body armor and .223-caliber rifles. The program provided the Humvees for free. Painting, graphics and emergency lighting were paid for with drug forfeiture funds.

Up to eight officers can fit into each Humvee. They can also drive through 30 inches of water.
