Michigan House OKs In-State Tuition For Veterans

Posted: Updated:
LANSING, Mich. (AP) - The state House has passed legislation allowing in-state and in-district tuition rates for military veterans attending Michigan public universities and community colleges.

The two resolutions required two-thirds votes and call for amending Michigan's constitution. All active duty military members, reservists and honorably discharged veterans would be offered the lower rates.

It now goes to the Senate for vote. The changes will be on the November ballot if approved by the Legislature.

The Michigan Community College Association opposes the legislation and says the state should cover the difference in tuition costs for veterans, which the legislation doesn't address.

A legislative fiscal analysis says thirteen of the state's 15 universities already offer in-state tuition for certain veterans through a federal program, which would limit the impact of the changes for those schools.
